Want to make a quick and easy custom marquee sign? Just grab a TI LaunchPad, a couple panels of the Olimex LED Matrix, and upload the Energia sample code. (Use Energia IDE, CCS Cloud, or CCS Desktop)
The hardware setup is very easy. The Olimex LED Matrix has 5 pins total: VCC, GND, Data, Clock, Latch. The Energia library uses bit banging so you can put Data, Clock, and Latch on any GPIO. VCC and GND need to be hooked up correctly on the LaunchPad. Use jumper wires to make the connections.
Finally go into the sample code and change the DATA, LATCH, CLOCK pin numbers to whatever GPIO pins you have them hooked up to.
Two other variables you may need to modify is TILES and SPEED. TILES defines how many Olimex panels you have connected in series. If you enter a value less than the number you have connected, the message will cut off prematurely. SPEED will determine the scroll speed and is based off of the CPU clock of the LaunchPad. Lower values will be faster.
Note, if you have more than 7 panels connected you will start to notice some flicker. This is due to the current consumption of all the LEDs.
To modify your custom text, just change the str value to a string of your choice.
Your end result will be your custom text floating from right to left.
